I remembered this over Christmas when, by chance, I caught the start of an episode of Thunderbirds.
The Thunderbirds theme tune almost makes me cry. It makes me want to stand to attention and salute. If the Thunderbirds theme tune was our national anthem, which it should be, Britain would be a proud nation. It would still have an empire on which the sun never sets. I'm not saying that's a good thing. I'm just saying.
The March of the Marionettes from the Laurel & Hardy film shorts would have made a good anthem; totally pompous but strangely alluring and endearing, buffoonish and cheering, a wonderful companion to the absurdity of life.

ReplyDeleteThe anthem of the UK is awful. England need their own anthem, something like Jerusalem if you will. As a whole though, the UK deserves a far better anthem than God Save the Queen. Land of Hope and Glory would be a good start, or even Rule Britannia.
